COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore guard Trey Kell has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The award is the first of Kell's career and the first of the season for the conference-leading Aztecs (14-6 overall; 7-0 MW).
A local product out of San Diego, Kell helped SDSU stay atop the league standings after the Aztecs defeated Fresno State and Utah State at home last week. In the two victories, the guard averaged a team-high 21.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and a team-high 2.0 steals. He shot 63.6 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from three-point range, while making 10-of-15 free throws.
In the overtime win vs. the Bulldogs, Kell scored a career-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting and a season-high seven free throws, five rebounds, a team-high four assists and a personal-best three steals. In the overtime alone, he scored six of SDSU's 16 points. Kell's point total was the most by an Aztec since Xavier Thames scored 30 on March 22, 2014, and he became the second Aztec since 1996-97 to record a game with at least 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals (Brandon Heath; Feb. 24, 2007).
The St. Augustine High graduate completed his week with his seven straight double-figure scoring game, posting 15 points to go with three rebounds, one assist and one steal vs. the Aggies. Of his 15 points, 12 were scored after halftime and 10 came during SDSU's 12-0 run once Utah State took a 41-39 lead early in the second half. Once the run was finished, the Aztecs led, 51-41, and never looked back en route to the 15-point win.
Kell and San Diego State are in action on Tuesday night when they play at Nevada. The game is set for an 8 p.m. PT start inside Lawlor Events Center and will air on ESPNU.
