SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team will open its spring slate on Saturday. The Aztecs will play host to UC Riverside at 9 a.m. and Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at Aztec Tennis Center.
The two-match slate will mark the 12th-consecutive year that SDSU has opened its spring season by facing UC Riverside. Last year, the Aztecs blanked the Highlanders, 7-0, bringing the overall series total to 11-0. The morning success was duplicated in the afternoon as San Diego State topped Cal State Fullerton, 6-1. The victory raised the all-time series total against the Titans to a staggering 29-0.
The Aztecs are coming into the dual-match season with confidence after a successful fall campaign. Senior Tami Nguyen posted a team-best 8-1 record after having a perfect performance in both SDSU Fall Classics and advancing to the quarterfinal round of the ITA West Regional. For her stellar fall showing, Nguyen was awarded with her first ITA singles ranking, the 50th spot in the national standings. In addition to Nguyen, five other Aztecs notched winning records during the fall season.
Following Saturday's opener, San Diego State will play host to No. 23 Kentucky on Jan. 29 at Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
