SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk has announced that Mark Martinez has signed a new contract to continue as the Aztecs' head baseball coach for the next five years.

Martinez completed his first season at the helm of the SDSU program in 2015 after assuming the head coaching role during the summer of 2014. In his first season as head coach, he led the Aztecs to a 41-23 record, a third consecutive Mountain West title and third straight berth in the NCAA Regionals.

Prior to assuming duties as head coach, Martinez served as an assistant coach at SDSU for 10 years after arriving for the 2006 campaign. He was instrumental in helping lead the Aztecs to Mountain West tournament titles in 2013 and 2014 before taking over the reins of the program. Over the past two years he has led San Diego State to back-to-back 40-win season for the first time since the 1990 and 1991 campaigns.

Martinez has had 42 players drafted in his time at San Diego State, and had six of those draft picks make the major leagues (Stephen Strasburg, Addison Reed, Justin Masterson, Bruce Billings, Quintin Berry and Lance Zawadski). In addition, Martinez has helped guide 46 Aztecs to All-Mountain West honors and coached four All-Americans and seven freshman All-Americans.

San Diego State opens its 2016 season with a three-game series against Oregon that gets underway with a contest on Friday, Feb. 19, at 6:00 p m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
