SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team had seven student-athletes recognized at the SDSU scholar-athlete banquet, held April 13 on campus at Montezuma Hall in the Conrad Prebys Student Union.
The 21st annual event, which featured Aztec Hall of Fame linebacker Kirk Morrison as master of ceremonies, honored student-athletes with at least a 3.0 cumulative or a 3.2 semester grade point average for the 2014 calendar year.
The SDSU women's basketball honorees included Chairese Culberson, Chloe Johnson, Kym Ellison, Geena Gomez, Cheyenne Greenhouse, Deidra Smith and Lexy Thorderson.
Culberson, who is currently in her second semester of graduate studies in homeland security, was recognized at the scholar-athlete banquet for the second year in a row, along with Johnson, a business management sophomore who was named to the Mountain West all-academic team in the spring of 2014. Meanwhile, Ellison, Gomez, Greenhouse, Smith and Thorderson received SDSU scholar-athlete distinction for the first time.
Collectively, the Aztec women's basketball squad posted its highest term GPA ever with a 2.91 during the 2014 fall semester, while the seven individual honorees represented its highest number of scholar-athletes since 2007.
In all, a San Diego State athletic department record 335 student-athletes were recognized, marking the 10th consecutive year the number of scholar-athletes has increased.
