CARLSBAD, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team moved into third place after firing a 2-under-par 282 on Tuesday during the second round of the Gifford Collegiate at OMNI La Costa Resort. The Aztecs posted the third-lowest team score of the day, vaulting two spots in the standings with a 36-hole total of 4-over 572 heading into Wednesday's final round on the par-71, 6,996-yard Legends Course.
Washington (-8) shot a collective 275 to forge a two-stroke advantage over second-place Stanford (-6), while host UCLA (+7) and Oregon (+9) round out the top five, respectively, behind SDSU.
The Aztecs boast three players among the individual top 20, led by Riccardo Michelini (Capri, Italy), who sits in a four-way tie for fifth at 2-under 140 after carding a second-round 71. Despite logging his third bogey of the day at the par-4 18th, the SDSU senior offset the damage with a trio of birdies, including two after the turn at No. 11 and No. 13.
With his effort, Michelini completed his fifth straight round at or below par and remains just three shots off the pace, along with Cole Madey of UCLA, Oregon's Sulman Raza and Chris Babcock of Washington. Husky teammate Corey Pereira (-5) stormed into the lead on the heels of a second-round 68, one shot ahead of Stanford's Jeffrey Swegle (-4), while fellow Cardinal golfer David Boote (-3) shares the third spot with Philip Juel-Berg of Colorado.
Aztec sophomore Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea) made steady progress up the ladder on Tuesday, climbing five places into a tie for 12th at 1-over 143 after matching Michelini's 71. The 2014 U.S. Amateur champion drained a team-high six birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-4, 493-yard No. 9, which ranked as the second-most difficult hole of round two. However, Yang was dogged by inconsistency, as four bogeys and a double on the par-5 eighth slowed his ascent.
The round of the day belonged to junior Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who made significant gains on the leaderboard after each carded a 70. Mendoza used a steady diet of 12 pars and four birdies to ease the sting of a double-bogey on the par-3 sixth and a bogey on No. 18, rocketing 17 places into an eight-way logjam for 18th at 2-over 144.
Likewise, Ree notched just two blemishes on his scorecard with bogeys at No. 9 and No. 15, but overcame the hiccups with a three birdies and a team-high 13 pars to catapult 19 spots into a tie for 26th at 3-over 145.
SDSU was also represented by Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.), who shaved four strokes off Monday's total with a second-round 74. After a bogey on the par-4 16th, the Aztec sophomore finished strong with a par and birdie on No. 18, which ranked as the toughest hole on Tuesday, to leap nine places into a tie for 60th at 10-over 152.
The Gifford Collegiate concludes on Wednesday when San Diego State tees off with front-runners Washington and Stanford for final-round action starting at 9:50 a.m. PDT on hole No. 1.
