Aztecs Down San Jose State in Three-Set Contest

SAN JOSE, Calif - The San Diego State volleyball team continued its late season surge, winning for the fourth time in its last five matches as it defeated San Jose State Saturday afternoon at Spartan Gym in San Jose. The Aztecs won the three-set contest by set scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-23.

With the victory SDSU improved to 11-19 overall and 8-9 in the Mountain West with one match remaining on its 2015 schedule. San Jose State, meanwhile, closed out its season with a mark of 13-18 (5-13 MW).

Emma Fuzie and Deja Harris led the Aztec attack with nine kills apiece as eight different players recorded at least two kills. Fuzie added a team-high four blocks along with three digs while Harris had a pair of blocks and a dig.

Libero Devyn Pritchard led all players with 15 digs and added two assists and two service aces to her final stat line. In addition, setters Hailey Jones and Lauren Utchen registered 20 and 16 assists respectively.

The opening set was tied at 1-1 before San Diego State ran off four straight points and led the rest of the way. The Aztecs extended their advantage to as many as eight points at 20-12 before finishing off the four-point set win. Fuzie had four kills and hit .800 in the contest while Pritchard and Danielle Bolden had two service aces apiece.

Set number two was a much tighter affair that saw seven lead changes and 13 tie scores. With the contest knotted at 14-14, SDSU took the lead for good with two consecutive points. The Spartans stayed within a point or two until the Aztecs went up by four at 22-18 before going on to the set victory. Bolden led the Aztecs with four kills while Baylee Little and Fuzie recorded two blocks each.

The third set was another close one that saw the Spartans rally from a late three-point deficit to tie the contest at 22-22. After the teams traded points, the Aztecs got a kill from Alexandra Psoma and a San Jose State attack error to claim the two-point set win and the match victory. Harris led SDSU with four kills with Psoma and Ciara Brown chipping in with three apiece.

San Diego State will now return home where it will play its final match of the 2015 season on Tuesday, Nov. 24, when Nevada visits Aztec Court at 6:00 p.m. That evening has been designated as Senior Night as SDSU will honor a pair of seniors (Kaja Sandberg and Ciara Brown) making their final appearances for the Red and Black.
