COLLEGE STATION, Texas - San Diego State finds itself tied for fifth after the opening day of the Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, Texas. The three-day meet is being hosted by Texas A&M and the Aztecs ended Thursday with 78 points to tie Utah in the 10-team meet.
The swimmers' top finish came in the 200 freestyle relay where the foursome of Taylor Johnson, Cailey Steffens, Savannah Miller and Whitney Weisz captured third place with a time of 1:30.32. That mark enters the SDSU record book as the third-fastest time in program history.
SDSU's `B' relay team also garnered points with a 13th-place finish. The quartet of Marina Preiss, Natilee Ruiz, Samantha Guttmacher and Summer Harrison went 1:34.44, a time just outside the Azteca all-time top 10.
In the 50 freestyle, Johnson turned in a personal best of 22.54 to take second in the consolation final (10th overall). Her time is the third-fastest ever by an SDSU swimmer in the event.
Weisz was two places behind Johnson in the 50 free, finishing in 23.11 seconds. Steffen, meanwhile, went 23.35 in the D Final, a mark that ranks as the 10th-fastest all-time by an Aztec swimmer.
In the 200 individual medley, Miller and Ruiz place second and third in the C Final with times of 2:01.74 and 2:03.40 respectively.
San Diego State picked up its remaining points in the 400 medley relay where all three teams scored. The foursome of McKenna Garfein, Cecilia Zaccarelli, Harrison and Weisz took ninth place overall with a mark of 3:39.39, the eight-best time in program history.
The team of Kate Santilena, Lydia Pereverzina, Guttmacher and Miller were 14th in 3:43.41 and the quartet of Andrea VanderMey, Taylor Young, Caroline Mitchell and Steffens were 18th in 3:46.64.
Action resumes at the Art Adamson Invitational Friday morning with prelims in five events beginning at 9:30 a.m. (CT). Finals in those events are scheduled to commence at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
