SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball program opens its 40th season of competition and third under head coach Stacie Terry this week when it faces Long Beach State in a Friday the 13th clash at Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT, with Aztec alumnus Chris Ello handling play-by-play responsibilities for a live audio stream available on GoAztecs.com.
After engaging the 49ers, SDSU returns to the friendly environs of Montezuma Mesa for its 2015-16 home opener against UC Riverside on Monday, Nov. 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. PT on the newly christened Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs-Highlanders showdown will feature a live video stream on GoAztecs.com as well, courtesy of the Mountain West Network.
LBSU and UCR are two of five repeat opponents on SDSU's non-conference slate this year, with the Aztecs looking to avenge last season's defeats to both adversaries. The 49ers emerged with a 74-62 triumph on SDSU's home floor in the second game of the 2014-15 campaign, while the Highlanders were victorious by a 64-54 count in the Inland Empire last December.
San Diego State returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last year's squad, including guard McKynzie Fort (Fontana, Calif.), who earned a spot on the MW all-freshman team during her rookie campaign.
The Aztecs also welcome a pair of talented newcomers in junior transfer Kylie Herd (Phoenix, Ariz.), who garnered second-team All-America accolades at Mesa Community College last season, and Arantxa Gómez (Valencia, Spain), who brings over six years of Spanish club experience to "America's Finest City."
In its lone tune-up before the regular season, SDSU posted a 76-61 exhibition victory over Point Loma at home on Nov. 6, as senior forward Deidra Smith (Aurora, Colo.) finished with a team-high 16 points, while Gómez added 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting in her collegiate debut.
Following Monday's tilt with UCR, the Aztecs will play host to UC Davis on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena. Tip time is set for 6:30 p.m. PT.
