SAN MARCOS, Calif. - San Diego State men's golfer Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) finished second as an unattached competitor on Tuesday at the CSUSM Fall Classic at Twin Oaks Golf Course. The Aztec sophomore posted a collegiate-best 9-under par 207 for the tournament, highlighted by 16 birdies overall.

With his score, Abercrombie logged his highest placement in a Scarlet and Black uniform, trailing only Ryan Douglass of South Mountain CC, who led wire-to-wire to capture medalist honors with a combined 13-under 203.

Abercrombie found himself in the eighth position after carding a 71 in Monday morning's opening round, but vaulted into a tie for third in the afternoon on the strength of 65, which marked his lowest 18-hole total in two seasons on The Mesa. The Rocklin High School alumnus climbed an additional spot on the individual leaderboard thanks to a final-round 71.

Abercrombie was joined by teammates Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), Otto Vanhatalo (Espoo, Finland) and Pablo Matesanz (Irun, Spain) at the 54-hole event hosted by Cal State San Marcos on the par-72, 6,535-yard course layout.

In his first action of the year, Mendoza tied for the 10th spot with a collective 2-under 214 on rounds of 75-70-69, which featured 14 birdies for the week, while Vanhatalo landed in a tie for 13th two strokes behind at even-par 216, vaulting 10 places from the previous day after firing a final-round 70. Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Matesanz, who matched Mendoza with 14 birdies to tie for 17th at 1-over 217 (74-72-71).

The Aztecs, who are ranked 26th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, wrap up their fall schedule next week when they compete in UCLA's Gifford Collegiate at La Costa Resort and Spa, Nov. 2-4, in Carlsbad, Calif.
