COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State forward Angela Mitchell has been named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The honor marks the second straight week in which the award was earned by an Aztec.
A sophomore from Corona, California, Mitchell started in SDSU road victories at Air Force and Colorado College last week. She led the team in goals (2), points (4), shots (6), shots on goal (4) and game-winning goals (1, tied).
In the 1-0 win at Air Force, Mitchell shared the team lead with four shots and two shots on goal before Sunday's stellar performance at Colorado College. In the 3-1 victory over the Tigers, she scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 49th minute. Mitchell's other goal came in the 57th minute.
For the season, Mitchell has eight goals, a team-high five of which have won the game for the Aztecs, and 16 points. Twenty of her 36 shots, meanwhile, have been on target, giving her a shots-on-goal percentage of .606, which leads all Aztecs (minimum 20 attempts).
Mitchell follows in the footsteps of Leah Pruitt, who won the same award last week. In total, SDSU has had the top offensive or defensive player in the MW four previous times in 2015. Pruitt has been recognized twice (Aug. 24, Oct. 19), while Stacie Moran and Jen Rupey were named MW Defensive Players of the Week on Aug. 24 and Oct. 5, respectively.
SDSU, which won the Mountain West regular-season title for the fourth straight year on Sunday, returns to action on Friday when it plays at New Mexico. The game is set for 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT and will stream live at GoAztecs.com and the Mountain West Network.
