SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team will begin the 2015-16 campaign on Sunday, Oct. 25 as it competes in the Row for the Cure regatta. The event will be held at North Ski Beach on Mission Bay. The race will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and is set to start at 7:40 am. The first event will be the open eight followed by the novice eight at 8 am and the open four at 9 am.
The Row for the Cure raises money from entry fees, donations and raffle tickets with all proceeds going directly to the Komen for the Cure and the fight against breast cancer. Of the funds raised, 75 percent are directed toward the San Diego community to support uninsured and underinsured women with breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and services. The remaining 25 percent goes directly to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs.
The Aztecs will face crews from University of San Diego, Orange Coast College and host, UCSD. San Diego State will have eight boats entered in Sunday's regatta, comprised of three open eight boats, two novice eight boats and three open four boats.
The ideal location for spectators to watch the race is from Vacation Island between the two Ingraham Street bridges on Mission Bay. Complete directions can be found here and final results for the event can be located here.
The SDSU rowing team will also be at Aztec Village on Friday ahead of the SDSU and Utah State football game. Fans are encouraged to meet and interact with the student-athletes where they will have the opportunity to try out the rowing machine the team uses during their practices. In addition to Friday's appearance, on Saturday morning after practice the Aztecs will christen the team's newest boat, a four-oared shell named the Bea Abelson.
