On the second day of the ITA West Regional, San Diego State senior Tami Nguyen found success as she posted two wins to advance to the singles quarterfinal, including an upset of a nationally-ranked opponent. The women's tennis team also advanced one doubles team to the round of 16.
In doubles action, Jana Buth and Nguyen defeated Emilia Borkowski and Danielle Pham of Cal State Fullerton, 8-4. Isabelle Hoorn and Olivia Larsson could not top Camille Deleon and Alexis Rae Valenzuela, also of CSUF, 8-6. Kennedy Davis and Taylor Lederman fell to seventh-seeded Laura Gulbe and Dzina Milovanovic of Pepperdine, 8-3.
In the singles round of 32, Jessica Perez of Loyola Marymount topped Paola Diaz de Regules, 6-1, 6-0. Nguyen downed Shayne Austin of Arizona, 7-5, 7-5, to advance to the round of 16. Nguyen would go on to upset No. 114 Zoe Katz of USC, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Aztec senior will compete in the quarterfinal tomorrow at 12:30 pm.
In the consolation bracket, Dora Somoracz fell to Vivan Lin of CSUN, 8-5. Hoorn topped Scarlett Rush of USD to advance, 8-7, 7-6 (3). In the third round of the consolation bracket, Larsson dropped her 8-1 decision to Tatum Prudhomme of Grand Canyon. Hoorn continued her winning ways by topping Scout Shutter of CSUN, 8-7, 7-6 (7). Davis was forced to withdraw from her match against Sophia Chow of USD due to injury. Lederman defeated Marisa Marsh of USD, 8-3.
SDSU will get back on the courts at the regional tomorrow at Barnes Tennis Center.
