FAIRFAX, Calif. - San Diego State's Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) fired an 11-under par 131 on Monday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the first two rounds of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the historic Meadow Club. With his total, the SDSU senior climbed into a three-way tie for second place after carding rounds of 66-65 on the par-71, 6,734-yard course layout.

As a team, the Aztecs occupy the fifth position on a tightly bunched leaderboard, with just nine strokes separating the top five schools. SDSU combined for a 21-under 547 on scores of 277-270 to finish the day one shot behind fourth-place Arizona State (-22) and two strokes in back of Pepperdine (-23) for third. Meanwhile, host California carded a blistering 30-under par to grab a six-shot advantage over San José State heading into Tuesday's final round.

Individually, the Aztecs landed two players in the top 10, highlighted by Ree, who posted his two lowest 18-hole scores as a collegian. The Redondo Beach, Calif., native drained a team-high 12 birdies overall, including seven in the afternoon to tie for the seventh-best single round in school history. In addition, the former Oregon transfer's day featured an eagle on the par-5, 506-yard 15th in the first round.

With his performance, Ree remains tied for second along with Jon Rahm of Arizona State and Pepperdine's Frederick Wedel, two shots behind second-round leader Cody Blick of San José State (-13). In all, a total of 40 players in the 80-golfer field shot under par for the day.

In addition, San Diego State received a tremendous boost from Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who finds himself tied for eighth after posting a collective 7-under 135. The Aztec senior offset three bogeys with five birdies in the opening round en route to a 69 before finishing with a 66 in the afternoon. Michelini was swinging a hot club himself in the second round, posting two eagles on a pair of par-5s, the 492-yard No. 1 and the aforementioned 15th, for his lowest 18-hole total in a Scarlet and Black uniform.

Elsewhere, PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) remains tied for 38th after shooting a 2-under 140. In his first varsity start of the season, the SDSU sophomore opened with a 74 before carding his second-lowest round as an Aztec with a 66 of his own in the afternoon. Samiere was plagued by two double-bogeys in the morning, but rebounded with eight birdies in the second round, including five on his final six holes.

Meanwhile, Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) sits four strokes in back of Samiere in a tie for 53rd at 2-over 144. Despite draining just two birdies in the opening round, the SDSU junior recorded 15 pars to ease the sting of a double-bogey at No. 15 en route to a 71. However, Song was unable to maintain a consistent rhythm in the afternoon as five bogeys, including three on his first six holes, proved too much to overcome. Still, the Beverly Hills High alumnus managed three birdies down the stretch for a second-round 73.

The Aztecs were also represented by Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea), who finished the day in a tie for 65th at 5-over 147. After opening with a 71, the SDSU sophomore found birdies elusive in the afternoon as three bogeys and a double-bogey contributed to an inflated 76.

The Alister MacKenzie Invitational concludes on Tuesday, with the 27th-ranked Aztecs teeing off alongside Michigan, San Francisco and Fresno State at 8 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
