COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-- San Diego State's Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) has been named Mountain West women's golfer of the month for her stellar performances in two September tournaments as announced Thursday by the league office. With her award, the Aztec senior garnered the third conference weekly/monthly accolade of her career and first of the season.
Henrikson is coming off an impressive showing at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 23, in Wolcott, Colo., where she captured medalist honors with an event-record 10-under par 206 to propel SDSU to the team title. The native Swede also tied a school standard for lowest 54-hole individual score in the process, highlighted by consecutive 67s in the second and third rounds, which matched her career best. In addition, she topped the field of 86 golfers with 20 birdies for the week and led the tournament with a 4.33 scoring average on par-5 holes (-8).
Earlier in the month, Henrikson was the Aztecs' top golfer at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in New Mexico, where she tied for third out of 104 competitors with a collective 6-under 213. In a stacked field that featured 11 top-50 squads, Henrikson stood tall against some of the nation's elite, finishing just two shots off the pace while besting five All-Americans from the previous year.
Through two events, Henrikson ranks seventh in the nation with a Mountain West-leading 69.83 stroke average and has completed four of six rounds below par this season. With her results, the SDSU finance major has earned a No. 5 individual ranking by Golfweek. For her career, she has compiled 11 top-10 placements, including six in the top three.
The Aztecs, ranked 17th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin team poll, return to action next week when they travel to the Pacific Northwest for the University of Washington's Edean Ihlenfeldt Invitational, Oct. 6-7, at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
