Aztecs Fall to No. 25 Wyoming in Three Sets

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State volleyball team opened its 2015 Mountain West home campaign with a three-set (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) loss to No. 25 Wyoming Thursday evening on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym.

With the result, SDSU saw its record fall to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West. The Cowgirls, meanwhile, won for the seventh straight time while improving to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Freshman Alexandra Psoma led the Aztecs with 11 kills on the night along with three digs and an assist. Deja Harrris added nine kills and a block while hitting .412 over the three sets.

Libero Devyn Pritchard paced SDSU with 12 digs while sophomore outside hitter Alexis Cage contributed a season-high 11 digs along with eight kills.

San Diego State ended the match with more kills that the visitors (42-40), but it was done in by 21 attack errors compared to just six for the Cowgirls. The Aztecs turned in a team hitting percentage of .175 while Wyoming finished with a .354 attack mark.

In the opening set, San Diego state found itself behind by three points on three occasions and each time fought back to tie the score. The Aztecs took their first lead of the contest at 19-18 and also led 21-20 before the Cowgirls scored four straight points to go up 24-21. SDSU got a kill from Psoma, her sixth of the set, before a Wyoming kill gave the visitors the set victory.

Set number two saw Wyoming race out to a 6-2 lead only to see SDSU come back to tie the contest at 7-7. The rest of the contest mirrored the first as the Aztecs found themselves down a couple points on two occasions only to come back to tie the set each time and eventually take the lead for the first time at 18-17. From there, however, the Cowgirls scored four consecutive points to go up 21-18 and take control of the set. Wyoming would go on to grab four of the final five points to claim the set and go up 2-0 in the match.

The third set was an even affair early with the score tied at 5-5 before Wyoming took the lead for god with back-to-back points. With SDSU trailing by just two at 12-10, the Cowgirls ran off six consecutive points to increase their advantage to 18-10.The Aztecs could only get back to within five the rest of the way as Wyoming went on to the seven-point set win to claim the match victory.
