TEMPE, Ariz. -
San Diego State-Arizona Final Box
San Diego State surrendered a ninth-minute goal to Arizona and it proved decisive as the Aztecs were on the wrong side of a 1-0 score Friday afternoon in Tempe. The loss was SDSU's second straight and dropped it to 2-2 on the season. The Wildcats, meanwhile, moved to 4-0.
The game-winning sequence was a result of an Aztec turnover that Arizona took advantage of. San Diego State's miscue took place in the midfield and Hannah Wong connected with Gabi Stoian, who pocketed her fourth goal of the season.
The opening minutes of the game was a sign of things to come for SDSU as they were able to penetrate the Arizona defense and create opportunities that it was unable to finish. Then came the Wildcat goal and San Diego State was forced to play catch-up.
But similar to the initial stages of the game, the Aztecs manufactured scoring chances throughout the first half and well into the second. Unfortunately, despite controlling the pace of play, they were unable find the back of the net.
Each team attempted 10 shots with Arizona putting six on net and San Diego State being credited with four. Leah Pruitt led all players with five shots and had a team-high two shots on goal. Melanie Vaughn finished with five saves in non-threatening situations.
The Aztecs return home for the first time since the season opener, which took place on Aug. 21, on Sunday to play host to Florida Gulf Coast. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT and the contest will stream live at GoAztecs.com via the Mountain West Network. Admission is free.
