SAN DIEGO - Fresh off a convincing victory at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Colorado last week, the San Diego State women's golf team has climbed to No. 17 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index. With their title, the Aztecs jumped nine spots from their No. 26 preseason rating in August, joining UNLV (No. 19) as the only two Mountain West schools to appear in the top 20.
Leading the SDSU charge so far this season are senior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) and junior Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who find themselves among the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings this week. Henrikson vaulted into the fifth position, while Blair checks in at No. 90.
Henrikson captured medalist honors at the Golfweek Challenge after setting a tournament record with a combined 10-under par 206, which also equaled a school standard for lowest 54-hole score. In addition, the native Swede tied for third at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in New Mexico earlier this month with a 6-under 213.
Through two events, Henrikson leads the Aztecs with a 69.83 scoring average, while Blair ranks second with average of 72.83 strokes per round.
Blair is coming off a solo fourth-place performance at the Golfweek Challenge, where she carded a 2-over 218, followed closely by sophomore Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who tied for eighth at 4-over 220.
Under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Leslie Spalding, San Diego State returns to the course next week for the Edean Ihlenfeldt Invitational, Oct. 6-7, at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
