ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ââ'¬" The San Diego State men's golf team finished fifth at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate after firing an even-par 288 during the final round on Saturday at UNM Championship Course. Despite posting their lowest combined score of the tournament, the Aztecs remained in the same spot from the previous day, finishing with a 54-hole total of 8-over 872 on the par-72, 7,556-yard layout.

Individually, SDSU was led by Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea), who landed in a five-way tie for sixth at 3-under 213 after matching his collegiate-best with a final-round 69. The Aztec sophomore drained three birdies to go with an eagle on the par-5, 602-yard No. 9 to secure his highest finish in a Scarlet and Black uniform.

Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) was the only other SDSU player to crack the top 20, tying for 16th at 1-over 217 after carding a 74. The Aztec senior made bogey on his first hole, the par-4, 423-yard No. 4, which set the tone for the remainder of his round. Despite sinking three birdies, Michelini was plagued by four additional bogeys, which dropped him three places on the leaderboard.

Conversely, Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) continued his steady ascent from Friday, vaulting 35 places into a tie for 49th at 11-over 227. After shaving nine strokes off his score between rounds one and two, the SDSU sophomore saved his best for last, posting a collegiate-low 70 over the final 18 holes. Abercrombie registered a team-high five birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-3, 260-yard No. 8, which ranked as the second-toughest hole on Saturday.

Senior Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) also displayed upward mobility in the standings, jumping 13 spots into a tie for 56th at 12-over 228 after carding a 75. Despite recording 10 pars and three birdies, Ree's round was short-circuited on the back nine by a double-bogey on the second green and a bogey at No. 4.

Elsewhere, Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) finished the weekend tied with Ree, but slipped 18 places on the leaderboard on the heels of a final-round 80. The Aztec junior quickly stumbled out of the gates with bogeys on four of his first five holes, followed by a double-bogey on the par-3 11th.

The SDSU delegation also included PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) and Pablo Matesanz (Irun, Spain), who competed as unattached players. Samiere climbed 14 places into the 39th spot at 8-over 224 on the strength of a 74, featuring 12 pars and two birdies. Matesanz, meanwhile, shot an 81 over the final 18 holes to complete the weekend a tie for 83rd at 235.

With all five of its starters finishing in the top 14, New Mexico (-24) ran away with the team title on its home course, easily outdistancing Texas Tech (-5), while two additional Mountain West members Colorado State (+4) and UNLV (+4) tied for third.

UNM's Andrej Blevins (-10) recorded a final-round 70 to claim medalist honors, holding off a charge by runner-up AJ McInerney of UNLV (-8), who fired a 68, while the Lobos' Gustavo Montares and Alex Chiarella of San Diego tied for third at 7-under.

San Diego State will take a two-week break from competition before returning to the fairways for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Oct. 12-13, at the historic Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
