BOISE, Idaho -
San Diego State-Boise State Final Box
San Diego State dropped its Mountain West opener Friday afternoon at Boise State, 2-1. The Aztecs fell to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league, while the Broncos improved to 3-4-3 overall (1-0 MW).
SDSU received a goal from Milan Moses in the 86th minute, but the Aztecs ran out of time and came up short after yielding two second-half goals, one in the 71st minute and the other in the 78th.
Boise State got its first goal after a bit of good fortune. Brooke Heidemann had her shot carom off the left post and Baylee Blaser was in the right place at the right time as she gathered the rebound and put her shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out.
Not seven minutes had passed when the Broncos ultimately scored what would be the game-winner. Michelle Reed dribbled the ball 25 yards down the field only to have Stacie Moran track her down. The sophomore made a sliding tackle in an attempt to knock the ball away, but Reed was able to maintain possession and get her shot from 15 yards away by Melanie Vaughn.
The Aztecs were finally able to break through thanks to Moses' third goal of the season, but the collective effort was not enough. Leah Pruitt, who pocketed her sixth assist and 10th point of the year, found Moses from the top of the box and Moses took advantage of the opportunity from 12 yards out.
The first half was a well-played, back-and-forth game that featured one golden chance for each side. SDSU had a goal called back after being whistled for a foul in the opening minutes of the game. Boise State, meanwhile, had a shot from 25 yards out hit the cross bar.
San Diego State outshot the Broncos, 7-6, but each of the home team's shots on net resulted in goals. The Aztecs managed just one shot on goal. SDSU finished with a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Scarlet and Black continue its road trip on Sunday when it plays at Utah State. The game is set for 1 p.m. MT and will stream live at GoAztecs.com via the Mountain West Network.
