ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in fifth place after shooting a combined 8-over par 584 on Friday during the first two rounds of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at UNM Championship Course. The Aztecs posted scores of 290-294 to remain seven shots in back of fourth-place UNLV on the par-72, 7,556-yard layout.
Host New Mexico carded a 21-under 555 on its home turf to grab a sizeable 14-stroke advantage over fellow Mountain West member Colorado State (-7), while Texas Tech (-5) sits in third heading into Saturday's final round.
SDSU had two players among the individual top 20 after 36 holes, led by Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who landed in a five-way logjam for 13th after recording a 1-under 143, while Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea) finished the day one shot behind in a tie for 18th at even-par 144.
Michelini offset two bogeys with a trio of birdies in the opening round en route to season-best 71 followed by a 72 in the afternoon. Despite sinking an additional four birdies in the afternoon, the Aztec senior experienced a tough three-hole stretch on holes 7-9 with a two bogeys and a double-bogey, which stalled his advance up the leaderboard.
Yang, meanwhile, posted scores of 71 and 73, highlighted by a team-high nine birdies, including five in the morning session. The SDSU sophomore was even through 10 holes in round two, but a bogey on the 11th green, followed by a double at No. 14 derailed his momentum. Despite of the hiccup, Yang still closed with a rush, alternating birdies and pars over his final four holes.
Elsewhere, Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) remains four strokes in back of Yang in a tie for 38th at 4-over 148. The Aztec junior countered three bogeys with a pair of birdies in the opening round en route to a 73 before recording a 75 in the afternoon. Song opened with four straight pars in round two, but was plagued by two bogeys and a double through the turn on holes 8-10, respectively. The back nine proved more fruitful with three birdies, including back-to-back conversions on the 18th and No. 1 greens, but two bogeys down the stretch stymied his progress.
In addition, Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was the fourth SDSU starter to finish with a higher score in round two on Friday, tying for 69th at 9-over 153 after posting a 75-78. The Aztec senior drained two birdies in each session, but could not overcome the sting of three bogeys and a double in the morning, while seven bogeys plagued his scorecard in the afternoon.
Conversely, Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) got off to a rocky start with an 83 in the opening round before shaving nine strokes off his score with a 74 in the afternoon. The SDSU sophomore was besieged by seven bogeys and two doubles in the morning, but managed to steer into smoother waters with 14 pars and a birdie in the second round to finished the day in the 85th spot at 13-over 157.
The Aztecs were represented by two others sophomores, PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) and Pablo Matesanz (Irun, Spain), who made their 2015-16 debut on Friday as unattached golfers. Samiere landed in the 53rd spot at 6-over 150 on rounds of 74-76, while Matesanz (74-80) tied for 75th at 10-over 154. New Mexico's Andrej Blevins and Alex Chiarella of San Diego each shot an 8-under 136 on Friday to grab a share of the lead over another UNM player in Gustavo Morantes (-7), while Texas Tech's Hannes Ronneblad (-6) remains in fourth.
The William H. Tucker Intercollegiate concludes on Saturday when San Diego State tees off alongside Wyoming, TCU and USD for the final 18 holes in a shotgun start, beginning at 8 a.m. MT.
