SAN DIEGO -- Former San Diego State men's golf standout J.J. Spaun earned an exemption on the Web.com Tour for next year after he was named the Mackenzie Tour -- PGA Tour Canada's 2015 Player of the Year last Sunday. The 25-year old Aztec alumnus set a record with $91,193 in earnings this past season, finishing atop Canada's Order of Merit to lead a group of five players in attaining Web.com Tour status for 2016.

Spaun, who logged seven top-10 placements on the year, including a victory at the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel in Thunder Bay, Ontario, became the first-ever player on the Canadian Tour to finish among the top five in four straight starts. He will be fully exempt on the 2016 Web.com Tour after finishing $11,297 ahead of No. 2 C.T. Pan of Taiwan.

Joining Spaun and Pan in "The Five" were No. 3 Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ontario, No. 4 Sam Ryder of Longwood, Fla. and No. 5 Jason Millard of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Albin Choi of Toronto, who was fifth in the Order of Merit heading into the week, tied for 13th at Freedom Financial Championship and was knocked out of the top five by Millard, who claimed the title at the season-ending event.

Spaun, who twice received All-America recognition by both the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and Golfweek, won five tournaments during his collegiate career, which is tied for first in school history with Aztec Hall of Famer Lennie Clements.

A Los Angeles native, Spaun also earned Mountain West Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2012 and garnered three consecutive all-conference certificates. He ended that season ranked 17th by Golfstat.com and 21st nationally by Golfweek after leading SDSU to its best-ever Division I team finish as the Scarlet and Black tied for fifth in the match-play phase of the NCAA Championships.

The present group of Aztecs will be back in action this weekend for the William H, Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
