WOLCOTT, Colo. ââ'¬" San Diego State women's golfer Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) fired a 2-under par 70 on Monday to grab a share of the lead during the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club. Collectively, the Aztecs find themselves in second place out of 18 schools after shooting a 6-over 294 on the par-72, 6,261-yard Tom Fazio Course.

Saddled with three bogeys on the front nine, Blair caught lightning in a bottle at the turn, draining a birdie on the 18th green, followed by an eagle on the par-5, 491-yard No. 2. The SDSU junior maintained the momentum with five pars and two additional birdies down the stretch to tie TCU's Sabina Pena for the top spot on the leaderboard heading into Tuesday's second round.

With two additional players among the individual top 10, the Horned Frogs (-1) opened up a seven-shot advantage over the Aztecs in the team standings, while host Denver (+8) sits in third, followed by Campbell (+11) and Arizona State (+11).

SDSU's Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) finished the day two strokes in back of Blair in a tie for seventh after notching an even-par 72. Despite sinking a team-high six birdies, including four on the front nine, the Aztec senior had her progress stymied by four bogeys, as well as a double-bogey on the par-4 16th.

In addition, sophomores Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) and Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) remain tied for 24th after each recorded a 4-over 76 on Monday.

In her first action of the new season, Lacey experienced some early rust with four bogeys and a double-bogey on her first six holes before righting the ship with four pars and two birdies through the turn. Despite back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth greens, the Torrey Pines High product finished strong with two pars sandwiched around a pair of birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-4 No. 8, which ranked as the second-toughest hole of the first round.

Meanwhile, Krause found birdies elusive on day one at Red Sky, but managed to ease the sting of four bogeys with 14 pars.

The Aztec contingent also included sophomore Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), who landed in a tie for 30th after logging a 77. Chaves persevered with a birdie and six pars over her final eight holes after making double-bogey at No. 16 on the front nine, followed by three consecutive bogeys.

The Golfweek Conference Challenge resumes on Tuesday when the Aztecs tee off alongside TCU and Denver in the second round, starting at 11:30 a.m. MT on hole No. 1.
