SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - San Diego State volleyball's weekend got off to a rough start as it dropped a three-set match to Cal Poly Friday evening in San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs prevailed by set scores of 25-22, 25-10, 26-24 as they sent the Aztecs to defeat for the sixth time in their last seven outings.
With the loss SDSU saw its season record fall to 2-8 while Cal Poly improved to 8-2. Junior Emma Fuzie led San Diego State with 10 kills as she was the only Aztec to end the evening in double figures in that category. She hit a team-high .471 over three sets and also recorded a pair of blocks, two digs and an assists to her final stat line.
Deja Harris added seven kills for the Aztecs while Alexis Cage turned in a personal season-best 10 digs.
Raeann Greisen led all players with 17 kills on the night for Cal Poly, which ended the contest with a .371 team hitting percentage compared to .204 for San Diego State.
The opening set went back and forth with the score being tied on 18 occasions, the latest coming at 21-21. From there the Mustangs tallied two straight points and led 23-22 before a kill and Aztec attack error gave them the three-point set win.
Set number two was all Cal Poly as it expanded an early 8-6 lead into a 20-8 advantage, a sequence that included a run of 10 straight points to take control of the contest.
The third set was the closest of three as San Diego state fought back from a 22-19 deficit to tie the contest at 22-all. After the teams alternated points to make the score 24-24, Cal Poly got back-to-back kills from Greisen to put away the set and match.
San Diego State will now move down to Santa Barbara where it will face the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 4:00 p.m. (PT) at UCSB's Thunderdome.
