HONOLULU - San Diego State turned in a dominating performance as it ended a four-match losing streak by defeating Eastern Washington in three sets Friday evening at the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge in Honolulu. The Aztecs disposed of the Eagles by set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 in a contest that lasted only an hour and 15 minutes.
With the victory SDSU improved to 2-6 on the season while EWU saw its record drop to 4-5.
Baylee Little and Alexis Cage led the Aztecs with 11 kills apiece as their total was more than the 20 turned in by Eastern Washington as a team on the night. Little added four service aces, two blocks and a dig with Cage registering a block and four digs.
Sophomore defensive specialist Devyn Pritchard set a career-best with eight assists, doubling her previous high of four set in each of the final two matches of last season. In addition she contributed seven digs.
Setter Hailey Jones led all players with 22 assists while Dani Bolden had a team-high nine digs plus three kills, two service aces and an assist.
San Diego State hit .319 as a team over the three sets while holding EWU to just a .028 hitting percentage.
The first set saw SDSU race out to a 5-1 lead, and the Eagles were only able to get as close as three the rest of the way with the last time coming at 8-5. The Aztecs built their lead to as many as 10 points at 19-9 and cruised to the nine-point victory. Little and Cage had six kills each to pace the SDSU attack.
In set two, the Eagles won the first point before San Diego State captured 13 of the next 15 to grab a 13-3 lead. That run included nine consecutive points behind the serving of Little, who notched four service aces along the way. Cage had three kills in the set as the team's 11 kills were spread among eight players.
Set number three saw the teams trade points early with the scored being tied on eight occasions until the board read 8-8. From there the Aztecs scored four straight points to take control of the set en route to the 10-point win. Alexandra Psoma led SDSU with four kills while Deja Harris chipped in with three blocks
San Diego State will wrap up tourney play in Honolulu on Saturday, Sept. 12, with a match against No. 2 Florida set to commence at 2:30 p.m. HT (5:30 p.m. PT).
