Aztecs Fall to No. 16 Hawai'i in Three Sets

HONOLULU - San Diego State opened play at the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge with a three-set loss (25-17, 25-11, 25-21) to No. 16 Hawai'i Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. The result was the fourth consecutive defeat for the Aztecs, who saw their season record fall to 1-5 while the Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-1.

Hawai'i showed why it is nationally-ranked as it controlled the tempo of the match room the start. Although they only hit .205 as a team over the three sets, the hosts held SDSU to a -.057 attack percentage. The Aztecs actually had more attack chances than their opponent (88-81), but the Wahine ended the evening with 31 kills to just 22 for San Diego State.

Redshirt freshman Deja Harris led SDSU with seven kills on the night along with a pair of blocks and a dig. Four of her teammates had three kills apiece including Emma Fuzie, Baylee Little, Kaja Sandberg and Alexis Cage.

Fuzie and Sandberg finished with five blocks each while libero Alexa Saba led the Aztecs with eight digs.

Setters Hailey Jones and Lauren Utchen both played in all three sets as they spilt time and ended the night with 10 and eight assists respectively.

San Diego State continues action at the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge on Friday, Sept. 11, with a match against Eastern Washington slated to get underway at 4:30 p.m. HT (7:30 p.m. PT).
