SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - San Diego State came from two sets down to record a 3-2 victory over CSU Bakersfield by scores of 21-25, 30-32, 25-15, 25-14, 15-7 Saturday afternoon to conclude play at the San Francisco Invitational. Earlier in the day the Aztecs dropped a 3-1 decision to Denver (28-30, 14-25, 25-22, 24-26).
In the victory over Bakersfield, four Aztecs ended the match in double figures in kills led by redshirt freshman Deja Harris with 16. She also recorded three digs and tied for the team high with five total blocks.
Senior outside hitter Ciara Brown registered 15 kills for SDSU while Baylee Little chipped in with 13. Brown and Little had two and six digs respectively along with a block.
In addition, Alexis Cage had 10 kills and came up just shy of a double-double with nine digs. Junior transfer Emma Fuzie had nine kills and tied Harris with five blocks.
Setter Hailey Jones finished the contest with 57 assists and completed her second double-double of the day with 11 digs.
Sophomore libero Alexa Saba had 29 digs, a stat that helped her earn all-tournament recognition. Over the Aztecs' three matches during the USF Invitational, she averaged 4.50 digs per set and also contributed five assists and three service aces.
San Diego State found itself down two games to the Roadrunners after dropping the second contest in heartbreaking fashion at 32-30. But the Aztecs found their offensive rhythm after that, capturing the third and fourth sets by 10 and 11 points before leading the fifth and deciding set from start to finish. Over those final three contests, the Aztecs hit .394 as a team while holding CSUB to a .108 mark.
In SDSU's first match of the day, the Aztecs dropped a 3-1 decision to Denver as they came up on the short end of two sets that were decided by extra points.
Freshman Alexandra Psoma led all players with 18 kills and the first-year Aztec from Greece notched her first double-double by adding 12 digs to her stat line.
Deja Harris tallied 11 kills along with an ace, three digs and a pair of blocks while hitting .500 for the match. Over her team's three contest during the weekend, Harris turned in a .460 hitting percentage while averaging 2.42 kills per set.
Jones produce her first collegiate double-double with 47 assists and 15 digs while Saba collected 16 digs along with a pair of assists and two service aces.
San Diego will now prepare for its 2015 home opener that comes up on Friday, Sept. 4, against Pacific at 7:00 p.m. on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym. That contest is part of the SDSU/USD 2015 Challenge that will see TCU take on Dartmouth in the opening match on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
