SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The San Diego state volleyball team opened its 2015 season with a three-set loss to the University of San Francisco (25-18, 25-14, 25-20) Friday evening at USF's War Memorial Gym. The match was played as part of the San Francisco Invitational being hosted by the Dons this weekend.
Junior middle blocker Baylee Little led all players with 11 kills over the three sets while also recording thee digs, a service ace and one block assist. She was the lone Aztec and one of only two players in the match to reach double figures in kills.
Outside hitter Alexa Cage had six kills and three dis while freshman Alexandra Psoma matched Cage's total with six kills and also had a pair of digs.
First-year Aztec Hailey Jones, a transfer from Irvine Valley JC, made her collegiate debut as SDSU's starting setter where she finished with 23 assists, six digs, an ace and a block assist. Returning sophomore libero Alexa Saba led the Aztecs with nine digs and also chipped in an assist and service ace.
San Francisco was led by Katarina Pilepic with 10 kills, four digs and two blocks. The Dons ended the night with a .323 team hitting percentage while SDSU could only manage a .041 attack mark.
San Diego State was unable to get its offense in sync much of the evening as they ended the match with a total of 27 kills along with 23 attack errors.
The Aztecs will continue play at the San Francisco Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29, with a pair of matches. SSDU will square off against 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Denver at 10:30 a.m. and conclude their weekend matches with a contest against CSU Bakersfield at 4:30 p.m. Denver defeated Bakersfield, 3-0, in the tourney's other contest on Friday.
