BEIJING - Former San Diego State track and field athlete Shanieka Thomas finished in 11th-place in the triple jump final at the 15th IAAF World Championships today in Beijing.
Representing Jamaica, Thomas posted a mark of 46 feet, 2 ½ inches (14.08 meters), which came on her third and final attempt. The top-eight placers after three jumps moved onto the true final, where they received three more attempts. Thomas qualified for the final by coming in eighth out of the 28 initial entrants with a leap of 46-01.25 (14.05m) on Saturday.
Colombia's Caterine Ibargüen picked up the gold medal with a mark of 48-10.75 (14.90m). Israel's Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko (48-06.00 (14.78m)) and Kazakhstan's Olga Rypakova (48-05.50 (14.77m)) earned the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Thomas finished her SDSU career in 2014 as a three-time NCAA triple jump champion (2013-14 outdoor, 2014 indoor) and a two-time runner-up finisher (2012 outdoor, 2013 indoor). She was a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American and nine-time MW champion.
Whitney Ashley, who won the 2012 NCAA title in the discus while competing for the Aztecs, competes in the final of the discus throw at 4 a.m. PDT Tuesday.
