BEIJING - Former San Diego State track and field standout Shanieka Thomas qualified for the finals of the triple jump at the 15th IAAF World Championships today in Beijing.
Thomas, who competes for Jamaica, finished eighth out of 28 entrants with a leap of 46 feet, 1 ¼ inches (14.05 meters). Monday's final begins at 4:30 a.m. PDT (7:30 p.m. CDT).
Thomas finished her SDSU career in 2014 as a three-time NCAA triple jump champion (2013-14 outdoor, 2014 indoor) and a two-time runner-up finisher (2012 outdoor, 2013 indoor). She was a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American and nine-time MW champion.
Whitney Ashley, who won the 2012 NCAA title in the discus while competing for the Aztecs, gets her qualification flights of the discus throw underway Sunday at 6:35 p.m. PDT (9:35 a.m. CDT) (Group A) or 7:55 p.m. PDT (10:55 a.m. CDT) (Group B).
