SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in an exhibition contest to cross-town foe San Diego Thursday night at SDSU Sports Deck.

The Aztecs, who are integrating 13 new players into the program this season, allowed a goal in the 61st minute, which proved to be the deciding goal. In the scoring sequence, the Toreros banked a shot off the crossbar, gathered the rebound and ultimately found the back of the net on their very next attempt.

SDSU, which employed different alignments throughout the game, controlled the first half and attempted four shots. Defensively, the Aztecs routinely kept USD out of the attacking third and limited them to just a pair of attempts, none of which were dangerous.

In the second half, San Diego State created a handful of scoring chances, but were unable to cash them in. Besides the lone Torero goal, the Aztec defensive unit limited USD's opportunities, which kept SDSU in the game until the final horn.

The Aztecs outshot San Diego, 11-7, but were on the short end on corner kicks, 3-2. Thom Van den Berg and Travis Nicklaw both had three shots to lead San Diego State.

SDSU will take the next week to prepare for its season opener on Saturday, Aug. 29, vs. Grand Canyon. First tap is set for 7 p.m. PT atop SDSU Sports Deck. Admission to the contest is free.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Kyle Adams is the Man of the Match for his performance in his first collegiate action. The freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, started the second half and played a key role in San Diego State preventing USD from having any dangerous offensive chances.
