SAN DIEGO - San Diego State softball head coach Kathy Van Wyk has announced the addition of Alex Formby to the program. A pitcher, Formby will join the Aztecs in the fall and will have three years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2016 campaign.

Formby comes to SDSU after spending her freshman season at Virginia, where she was 3-14 in the circle with a 7.30 ERA over 102 2/3 innings. A right-hander, Formby appeared in 30 of the team's 56 games, starting 19 times and completing eight games. She struck out 55 batters against 81 walks for the Cavaliers (16-40). Her best game was arguably against Virginia Tech on April 8, when she combined with twin sister, Andie, for a no-hitter, in a 5-2 victory. It was the first combined no-hitter in program history and first at UVA since 2009. Formby was also 1-for-4 (.250) at the plate, while committing just one error in 17 fielding chances, posting a .941 fielding percentage.

Prior to joining Virginia, Formby was a four-year letterwinner at Mater Dei High School and Los Alamitos High School, while playing her club ball with the So Cal Choppers. A 2011 NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete, Formby helped lead Mater Dei HS to a Trinity League title in 2013 and Los Alamitos HS to the Sunset League championship and to the semifinals of the CIF Championships. A four-year honor roll member, Formby picked San Diego State out of UVA over other interest from Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, Purdue and Wisconsin.

The Aztecs finished 2015 with a 38-20 record, advancing to the NCAA Regional final for the third time since 2011 and fifth time in 11 tournament trips. SDSU, one of just 20 schools in the country to play in a NCAA tournament at least eight consecutive years, finished the year with seven school records, including batting average (.312), slugging percentage (.486), runs (324), home runs (63), RBIs (293), total bases (758) and hits (484).
