SAN DIEGO - San Diego State set a school record with 69 student-athletes earning 2015 Mountain West Academic All-Conference Awards for the spring semester. The record number came from 10 different sports and erases the old SDSU standard of 64 honorees back in spring of 2013.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
Leading the way for SDSU were a pair of MW championship squads in swimming and diving and baseball. The swimming and diving team had 17 earn their way onto the list, while baseball had 11 players pick up all-conference recognition. Track and field, meanwhile, was the third Aztec program with double-figure award winners with 10.
The balance of San Diego State's total is as follows: softball -- 8, women's tennis -- 7, women's basketball -- 5, men's tennis -- 4, women's golf -- 3, men's basketball -- 2, men's golf -- 2.
This is the fifth consecutive season in which SDSU has had at least 50 Aztecs honored in the spring by the Mountain West. In the previous 11 years, San Diego State hit the 50-mark only once when it had 52 award winners in the spring of 2008.
The school-record figure caps a 2014-15 academic year that saw the Aztecs win eight team championships, including seven in the Mountain West. In addition to swimming and diving and baseball, San Diego State won MW titles in women's soccer (regular season, tournament), men's basketball (regular season), women' golf and men's golf. Since the start of 2012-13, SDSU has won 27 conference team championships, including a league-best 25.
