CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - San Diego State's Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay) has been named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team for her performance in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year.
The Aztec rising sophomore was among 758 collegiate golfers from Division I, II and III schools to earn the academic honor from the WGCA, which maintains some of the most stringent criteria in all of intercollegiate athletics for consideration to the prestigious group. In order to be considered for the WGCA All-American Scholar Team, candidates are required to retain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.
Chaves made a huge splash as a freshman during the 2014-15 campaign, earning second-team all-Mountain West honors after tying for the team lead with a 73.93 scoring average in 27 rounds of stroke play, which ranked sixth in the league. The native Paraguayan finished as SDSU's No. 1 golfer in four out of five tournaments during the spring schedule, including the MW Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where she led the Aztecs to their first-ever conference title with a runner-up placement on the individual leaderboard. Chaves, who completed regulation play in a tie for first, set a league record for lowest opening-round score in the MW tournament with a 6-under par 66 before ultimately falling in a sudden-death playoff.
In addition, Chaves was SDSU's top golfer at the NCAA regional championships in St. George, Utah, where she landed in a tie for 20th as the Aztecs finished 11th out of 18 squads. She also established a school standard for lowest 18-hole score by an SDSU player in regional competition after shooting a 2-under 69 during the final round at the event.
The Aztecs completed their most successful season in program history with a No. 26 ranking in the final Golfweek team poll.
