SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Cody Thompson tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting the University of San Diego to just four hits as the Aztecs defeated the Toreros, 3-0, Tuesday evening at USD's Fowler Park. With the victory SDSU improved to 32-18 on the year while the loss dropped USD to 28-19.
Over his nine innings of work, Thompson allowed three singles plus a double and only one Torero base runner advanced as far as second base. That came in the bottom of the seventh when USD put men at first and second with the double and a walk with two out before the Aztec right-hander got the final out of the frame on a called third strike.
The contest was a pitcher's duel over the first six innings as San Diego State was having little success against Torero starter Taylor Kaczmarek. The Aztecs managed only one hit against the junior right-hander although they did put two men on in both the first and third innings with a walk and hit batter in each frame.
The breakthrough for the SDSU offense came in the top of the seventh against reliever Daniel Reitzler. Spencer Thornton led off with a single to left and was sacrificed to second by Alan Trejo. After a fly ball for the second out, Danny Sheehan singled to center to bring home the first run of the contest. Steven Pallares then doubled to left center field allowing Sheehan to come all the way around and give the Aztecs a 2-0 advantage.
SDSU added one more run in the next inning when Ty France singled, stole second and went to third a ground out to short. With two out, Reitzler then balked France home make it a 3-0 ball game.
With the victory Thompson improved to 3-4 on the season while Reitzler took the loss to even his season ledger at 2-2.
Sheehan finished the evening with three hits for the Aztecs including a double, an RBI and a run scored.
San Diego State will now prepare to resume Mountain West action as it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a three-game series at Air Force that gets underway on Friday, May 8, at 3:00 p.m. (MT) at Falcon Field.
