SAN DIEGO - An institutional-high 12 San Diego State programs set a record multi-year Academic Progress Report (APR) score in the annual set of data released today by the NCAA.
The 12 Aztec programs that set multi-year record marks include baseball, men's basketball, football, lacrosse, rowing, swimming and diving, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
All of San Diego State's 19 athletic programs exceeded NCAA APR minimums, with 16 programs equaling or improving its multi-year score from the previous year.
"We take great pride in not only our student-athletes athletic accomplishments, but also their hard work and success in the classroom," SDSU athletic director Jim Sterk said. "Our goal continues to be to compete both athletically and academically, and our student-athletes inspire all of us with success.
"I congratulate (associate athletic director of student-athlete academic support services) Bobby Smitheran and his entire staff for their continued efforts in assisting our student-athletes. Like me, they take tremendous pride in the accomplishments of our student-athletes."
On Wednesday, the NCAA released information for every school in the country based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Scholarship student-athletes each semester receive one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face consequences, including practice restrictions and playing-season reductions. Rates reflect performance over the past four years, with today's latest multi-year score being based on the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.
Nationally, 28 Division I programs took penalties and an additional 21 teams will be ineligible for postseason play in 2015-16. Programs are subject to penalties if the multi-year APR score falls below 930. All of San Diego State's athletic programs own a multi-year rate of 945 or higher, including 16 teams with a score of 960 or better.
Future increases in overall APR scores can be expected based on the most recent single-year (2013-14 scores). Five SDSU teams posted perfect 1,000 scores - lacrosse, men's soccer, swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball. Also, six other squads posted single-year numbers of 980 or better.
Women's tennis earned a perfect 1,000 multi-year rate and were recognized last week by the NCAA with a Public Recognition Award. It marked the third consecutive season that program has earned public recognition from the NCAA.
San Diego State's academic success goes well beyond the NCAA's APR report. In the fall 2014 semester, seven Aztec teams set program highs in grade-point average, while nine teams posted an average GPA of 3.00 or better.
SDSU is once again enjoying a great season on the field. To date, the Aztecs have won eight conference team championships, with nine teams (baseball, men's basketball, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, swimming and diving, men's tennis) competing in NCAA team championships.
San Diego State continues to excel in both football and men's basketball as the football team advanced to its fifth consecutive bowl game and the men's basketball team played in its sixth straight NCAA tournament.
SDSU joins Louisville, Michigan State and Wisconsin as the only four programs in the country to advance to bowl games each of the last five seasons and play in the six most recent NCAA men's basketball tournaments. Since the beginning of the 2010-11 school year, the Aztecs have posted a 182-60 record (75.2 percent) in football and men's basketball games, the fourth-best record in the country (Ohio State, Louisville and Wisconsin).
In addition, San Diego State and Louisville are the only two schools in the country to earn three straight trips to the NCAA baseball tournament, play in each of the last six consecutive NCAA men's basketball tournament appearances and play in bowl games each of the last five seasons.
