RENO, Nev. - San Diego State captured its third Mountain West Tournament championship in three years as it defeated New Mexico, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. The victory not only gave the Aztecs the conference title, it also meant a berth in the NCAA Regionals for the third straight year.
With the win SDSU improves to 40-21 on the year and marks its second consecutive 40-win campaign.
The contest featured five lead changes over the first six innings with the last one coming in the bottom of the sixth when the Aztecs went ahead for good.
Trailing 4-3, San Diego State rallied for a pair of runs to go up 5-4, in the sixth. Justin Wylie led off with a single and went to second when Alan Trejo was hit by pitch.
Chase Calabuig's second sacrifice bunt of the day moved both runners up a base and Wylie would score on Steven Pallares' ground out to shortstop. Danny Sheehan followed with a double to left center to score Trejo and give the Aztecs a lead they would not relinquish.
Sophomore left Marcus Reyes, who had come on in the top of the sixth to extinguish a Lobo rally, would eventually be credited with the win to improve to 7-3.
San Diego State added an insurance run in the eighth. Trejo singled and went to second on another sac bunt by Calabuig. With two out, Sheehan come through again with an RBI single to right center to put the Aztecs up 6-4.
SDSU reliever Brett Seeburger sailed through the Lobo eighth and retired the first two batters in the ninth before surrendering an infield single. That brought on Bubba Derby from the pen for his first relief appearance of the year.
After walking the first man he faced, Derby got a fly ball to center for the final out to secure the win and record his first save of the season.
Five Aztecs were named to the all-tournament team led by MVP Seby Zavala. SDSU'S other honorees included outfielder Spencer Thornton and designated hitter Justin Wylie along with pitchers Jacob Erickson and Mark Seyler.
The Aztecs will now await word of their NCAA Regional assignment which will be announced Monday morning (May 25) at 9:00 a.m. on ESPN.
