RENO, Nev. - San Diego State fell behind by seven runs, came back to within two, but eventually ended up on the wrong end of a 15-7 score line as it fell to Fresno State at the Mountain West Tournament in Reno, Nev., Thursday evening. With the loss the Aztecs fell to 35-21 on the season.

Fresno State (31-26) opened the scoring with a solo home run by Manny Argomaniz in the top of the second, then added six unearned runs in the next frame to jump out to a 7-0 advantage.

In that six-run outburst, a one-out throwing error was followed by a single, safety squeeze, three more singles and a pair of doubles as the Bulldogs sent 10 men to the plate against SDSU starting pitcher Bubba Derby. The junior right-hander would go 5.1 innings allowing a total of nine runs (three earned) on 11 hits with a walk and three strikeouts. With the loss he saw his record fall to 7-4.

After Fresno State added its seventh run in the top of the fourth, San Diego State began a comeback effort in the bottom of that inning as Justin Wylie's RBI single drove home Spencer Thornton, who had singled to open the frame and advanced to third on Andrew Brown's base hit.

The Aztecs made it interesting with four runs in the next inning to close to within 7-5. A walk to Chase Calabuig and single by Steve Pallares put runners at first and third with one out before Ty France delivered an RBI single to left to bring home Calabuig. That made it 7-2 with men at first and second when the Aztecs scored three runs on the same play with the help of a couple of Bulldog miscues.

Thornton singled to right to drive home Pallares and send France toward third. When the right fielder's throw went past third base France headed for home. The throw to the plate by the third baseman skipped past the catcher and into the SDSU dugout making France safe and allowing Thornton to score as well.

But that's as close as the Aztecs would get the rest of the way as the Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the fifth and added six more in the eighth to take an insurmountable 15-5 lead. SDSU's final two runs came in the bottom of the eighth on a two run homer to left by Pallares after Alan Trejo had singled.

Pallares ended the evening with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored while Thornton tallied three hits, an RBI and scored twice. Danny Sheehan also contributed a pair of doubles.

San Diego State will move on to play on Friday, May 22, at either 11:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. depending on the outcome of Thursday night's late contest between New Mexico and Nevada. If Nevada wins that game, the Aztec would play the winner of the morning Air Force-New Mexico contest at 3:00 p.m. If New Mexico wins, SDSU would play Air Force at 11:00 a.m.
