TUCSON, Ariz. - Despite carding its second straight 4-under par 280 on Saturday, the San Diego State men's golf team slipped one notch into third place during the second round of the 2015 Mountain West Championship at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.
The Aztecs, who sit at 8-under 560 for the tournament, lost ground to front-runner UNLV (-19) and second-place Nevada (-11) after their two adversaries posted scores of 276 and 277, respectively, on the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course.
The Aztecs were paced by sophomore Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), who remains in third place on the individual leaderboard at 6-under 136 after firing a 2-under 69. The Frances Parker High alumnus offset a pair of bogeys with four birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-3, 186-yard No. 17, which ranked as the sixth-toughest hole on Saturday. With his total, Mendoza posted consecutive rounds in the 60s for the first time as a collegian and finds himself six strokes in back of leader Kurt Kitayama of UNLV (-12), who logged his second straight 65, and one shot behind Nevada's Corey Eddings (-7).
Senior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), who entered the day tied for third with Mendoza, dropped one spot into a tie for fourth at 5-under 137 with the Nevada duo of Grant Booth and Nick Fuller. Despite carding just one bogey, Schauffele was unable to keep pace after draining just two birdies compared to five on Friday. Still, the Scripps Ranch High product managed to maintain a lofty perch thanks to a team-high 15 pars, including 10 straight to end his round.
The Aztecs' highest birdie count of the day belonged to Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who sank six en route to a 70. However, the junior transfer's second round was tempered by five bogeys, including four on his last six holes. Despite the wobbly finish, Ree still climbed one spot into a tie for 12th at 1-under 141.
Elsewhere, PJ Samiere (Kailua Hawaii) made SDSU's jump on the leaderboard, vaulting 17 places into a tie for 28th at 5-over 147 after logging a 71. The Aztec freshman recorded countered two bogeys with a pair of birdies, including an impressive make at the par-4, 470-yard 18th, which ranked as the toughest hole of the first two rounds.
The SDSU contingency also included Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who sits one shot in back of Samiere in the 36th position at 6-over 148 after recording a final-round 73. Despite four bogeys, including three on the front nine, the Aztec junior played fairly steady golf after the turn, carding six pars and two birdies.
The MW Championship concludes on Sunday with final-round action when San Diego State once again tees off with UNLV and Nevada, starting at 9:30 a.m. PT.
