Rowing Finishes Season; Lands Two On All-League Squad

May 17, 2015

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The San Diego State rowing team wrapped the 2015 season at the American Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday. The Aztecs finished sixth in the overall team standings. All of SDSU's boats posted qualifying times to advance each to their respective grand finals. Two Aztecs were also named to the all-conference team.

The first race of the day came in the varsity eight event. In the time trial, the top six finishers would advance to the grand final and the final two would move onto the petite final. San Diego State finished in the fifth spot with a time of 6 minutes, 26.536 seconds, which qualified the crew to advance to the grand final. The Aztecs would again cross the finish line in the fifth position (6:26.536), again behind SMU (6:48.499) and ahead of Villanova (6:30.914).

In the second varsity eight time trial, the top six would also advance to the grand final. The Aztecs (6:39.865) made the cut, finishing in the sixth spot, just behind UConn (6:37.332). In the grand final, SDSU (7:07.132) placed sixth, just behind fifth-place finisher UConn (7:06.017).

In the varsity four event, San Diego State posted its best finish of the day in the time trial. The top six finishers would advance to the grand final and the Aztecs crossed the line in the third spot (7:19.988). In the grand final, SDSU (7:52.286) finished ahead of SMU (8:00.440) to claim the fifth spot.

The second varsity four crew qualified for the grand final (7:33.145) by finishing ahead of Villanova (7:29.967) and SMU (8:32.436) to claim the sixth spot. The Aztec boat would cross the finish line in the fifth position but their results would be excluded after the coxswain mistakenly left behind her weight and SDSU self-reported the error. Had the fifth-place finish by the second varsity four counted, the team would have finished one place higher in the overall standings.

The day's racing results combined to give San Diego State a sixth-place finish in the overall team standings, just three points behind the fifth-place team, SMU.

In addition, the Aztecs placed two on the all-conference squad. Isabelle Paul, the sixth seat in the varsity eight boat, was named to the first team. Christa Carrillo, the fifth seat also in the varsity eight boat, was named to the second team.
