LOS ANGELES - Senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) homered and drove in four runs, including the game-winning single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the San Diego State softball team to a 5-4 win over CSUN at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional. The Aztecs (37-19) moved onto play Texas (38-16) at 6:19 p.m. PT in another elimination game, while the Matadors (41-17) had their season come to an end.
Junior Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.) led off with a single up the middle in the decisive sixth and was replaced at first by senior Jacki Campa (La Verne, Calif.). Senior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) and junior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) each followed with walks to load the bases. Senior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) hit a deep fly to left field, where Taylor Nate caught it and threw Campa out at the plate as Miles and Camello moved up a base. Junior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) then drew a four-pitch walk, setting up a bases loaded situation for Bauer. Bauer singled through the right side to plate Miles with the final run of the game. CSUN pitcher Zoe Conley got out of the jam by getting Aztec freshman Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) to line out to center field.
The Matadors mounted one last comeback in the seventh as Katie Hooper had a one-out single and, after Miles made a great running catch in center field, Maylynn Mitchell was hit by a pitch. SDSU sophomore pitcher Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.), however, struck out Cortney Horne to end the game and keep San Diego State's season alive.
CSUN got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning as Taylor Glover reached on a fielding error by SDSU and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Matadors took advantage of another San Diego State error in the third with Savannah Horvath eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ariana Wassmer.
The Aztecs got their bats going in the bottom of the third with Ruiz first singling home Camello and moving Jordan to third. Zoe Conley replaced Brianna Elder in the circle for CSUN to face Bauer, who promptly took the first pitch she saw well over the left-center field wall to give San Diego State a 4-2 lead. It was Bauer's 19th home run of the season and 60th of her career, while Jordan broke the school's single-season record with her 63rd run.
The Matadors got one back in the fourth when Carissa Sherman's bunt single scored Kaitlin Toerner. CSUN later loaded the bases with one out, but Romero (35-16) got Horvath to ground into a fielder's choice to Ruiz at second base, who got the runner at home, and Hooper to fly out to Miles in center field.
Horne, however, tied it up at 4-4 for the Matadors with a two-out, solo homer in the top of the fifth.
SDSU threatened in its bottom of the fifth as Ruiz drew a walk and Bauer followed with a double off the left field wall. Freshman Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) replaced Bauer at second, but CSUN's Conley got three consecutive outs, including two strikeouts, to end the inning.
It would remain 4-4 until Bauer's game-winning single in the sixth.
Bauer led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, four RBIs and a run, while Jordan had two hits, a run and her 20th stolen base of the year. Ruiz singled, had an RBI, run and two walks, and Miles was 1-for-1 with a run and two walks.
Romero picked up the win after allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits, a walk and a hit batter over seven innings.
