LOS ANGELES -- The San Diego State softball team dropped the NCAA Los Angeles Regional opener to Texas, 8-3, Friday at Easton Stadium. The Aztecs (36-19) will now play an elimination game against CSUN at 2:30 p.m. PT Saturday.

SDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Longhorns (38-15) answered with the final eight runs of the game, including seven with two outs.

San Diego State got all three of its runs in the top of the first inning thanks to three hits, a walk and two UT errors. Senior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) led off with a walk and later scored on a fielding error by Texas left fielder Stephanie Wong. Later in the inning, freshman Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) singled home junior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) and freshman Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored on a fielding error by second baseman Stephanie Ceo.

The Longhorns responded in the bottom of the first with five runs, highlighted by a bases loaded double by Gabby Smith just over the head of Aztec senior centerfielder Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.).

UT added a run in the second when Lindsey Stephens scored on a single by Erin Shireman.

Texas scored again in the third as Stephens drew a bases loaded walk. SDSU sophomore pitcher Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) got out of the inning, however, by striking out Longhorn cleanup hitter Randel Leahy.

In the fourth, Shireman took a 0-2 pitch over the left field wall to give UT an 8-3 advantage.

It would be the final run of the game as Romero (34-16) retired nine out of the final 10 batters she faced with one walk allowed in between.

San Diego State had seven hits in the contest, led by Ruiz' three singles. Senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) had a double, while junior Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.), Peres and Stewart each added singles. Jordan walked and scored her 62nd run of the year, which ties Miles (2012) for the most in Aztec single-season history.

Romero took the loss after yielding eight runs on nine hits, five walks and a hit batter over six innings. She struck out two and stranded seven Texas runners.
