SAN DIEGO - San Diego State scored in seven of the first eight innings as it led St. Mary's, 20-6, in a game that was suspended due to rain heading to the top of the ninth inning Thursday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The contest will be resumed on Friday (May 15) prior to the regularly scheduled game between the Aztecs and Gaels set for 6:00 p.m.
SDSU came out quickly and scored 10 runs over the opening three innings with three in both the first and second and four more in the third. Included in those runs was a three-run homer by Seby Zavala in the bottom of the second, his team-leading ninth of the season.
Zavala ended the evening with three hits including the home run, a double and single with four RBI. He was also hit by pitch twice, reaching safely in all five of his plate appearances.
Aztec starting pitcher Bubba Derby, meanwhile was keeping the Gael offense at bay over the first three innings before surrendering a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Collin Ferguson. Derby would go five innings allowing the two runs on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
SDSU answered right back with four runs in the fourth courtesy of a two-run double by Danny Sheehan and a two-run homer by Steven Pallares, his seventh of the year. Pallares ended the night with two hits and three RBI.
Eight of the Aztecs' starters had at least one hit and scored a run in the game. In addition to Zavala, Spencer Thornton (RBI, three runs scored) and Sheehan (four RBI, two runs scored) recorded three hits including two doubles each. Ty France had a pair of hits, was hit by pitch twice and scored four times.
Freshman catcher Hunter Stratton finished off the SDSU scoring in the bottom of the eight with a towering two-run homer to right. Not only was the blast his first career homer, it marked his first collegiate hit as an Aztec.
Start time for the completion of the contest was yet to be determined, but will be prior to the regularly scheduled game between the Aztec and Gaels Friday evening.
