SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Long Beach State scored four time in the top of the first inning and San Diego State was unable to recover as it dropped a 10-5 decision to the 49ers Monday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The loss dropped the Aztecs' record to 24-9 while LBSU improved to 18-10.
LBSU used a hit batter, RBI double, RBI single and a two-run homer against starting pitcher Cody Thompson to take the early 4-0 lead. The teams would then trade runs over the final five frames with the visitors scoring in each inning from the fifth through ninth while the Aztecs scored in the fourth through seventh.
Thompson would go 5.1 innings in the contest allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts. The result would mean he would take the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.
The Aztecs cut the 49ers four-run lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by freshman Chase Calabuig, the first of his two hits on the night. The teams traded runs in the fifth as SDSU remained within two runs at 5-3, but that was a close as it would get the rest of the way as Long Beach had an answer every time the Aztecs scored.
Shortstop Danny Sheehan led the SDSU offense in the contest as he registered three hits including a pair of doubles with an RBI and run scored. Senior Ryan Muno contributed a solo home runs, his second of the season.
San Diego returns to action on Tuesday, April 7, when it concludes it current six-game home stand by hosting UC Irvine for a game scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
