TEMPE, Ariz. - In its penultimate tournament of the regular season, the San Diego State men's golf team sits in a tie for 11th place with Washington State after posting a combined 20-over-par 580 on Friday during the first two rounds of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course. Individually, the Aztecs were led by Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), who carded a 3-over 143 to tie for the 26th position on the par-70, 6,971-yard layout.
SDSU got over to a slow start during the opening round as none of its five starters were able to break par, including Schauffele, who recorded an uncharacteristic triple-bogey at the par-4, 498-yard No. 10 en route a 73. However, the Aztec senior regrouped with a 70 in the afternoon, offsetting four bogeys with four birdies, including back-to-back conversions on the 13th and 14th greens. With his second-round total, Schauffele jumped nine places on the leaderboard and finds himself four shots out of the top 10 heading into Saturday's finale.
Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was not as fortunate, however, dropping 20 spots into a tie for 36th at 4-over 144 after posting rounds of 71-73. The SDSU junior matched Schauffele with seven birdies on the day, but consecutive double-bogeys on Nos. 9-10 in the afternoon thwarted his advance. Still, Ree managed to recoup some momentum for Saturday by finishing with six pars and two birdies.
Likewise, Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) closed with a rush on Friday, notching seven pars over his last eight holes for a second-round 72. With his score, the Aztec sophomore climbed three places into a tie for 52nd at 7-over 147 after firing a 75 in the morning. Despite four birdies, Mendoza's opening round was plagued by three bogeys and a trio of double-bogeys. However, the Frances Parker High alumnus minimized the damage in the afternoon, countering four bogeys with two additional birdies.
Similarly, Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) made a modest move up the leaderboard, jumping four places into a tie for 58th at 8-over 148. The SDSU sophomore endured two bogeys and a double-bogey in a four-hole stretch in round two, recording three pars and birdies for a 72. With his effort, Song trimmed four strokes off his morning total of 76, which was hampered by seven bogeys and a double-bogey at the par-3 No. 6.
Rounding out the Aztec lineup PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii), who sits one shot in back of Song in a tie for 65th at 9-over 149 after carding rounds of 74-75. Despite recording a team-high 24 pars on the day, the SDSU freshman was sandbagged by seven bogeys overall, along with an untimely triple-bogey at the par-4 18th in the afternoon. Still, Samiere managed to generate bit of momentum with birdies on his two finishing holes.
The Aztecs were also represented by unattached golfers James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Michael Koeneke (San Diego, Calif.) Holley landed in a tie for 58th with Song after posting rounds of 75-73, while Koeneke struggled with a pair of 79s.
Jon Rahm and Max Rottluff of Arizona State grabbed a share of the individual leaderboard after each shot a blistering 11-under 129 on Friday, while Iowa State's Nick Voke (-3) and Nick Thornton (-3), and unattached golfer from Baylor, remain tied for the third spot, eight shots off the pace heading into Saturday's final round.
Buoyed by their stellar combo, the host Sun Devils (-16) opened a comfortable advantage over Baylor (-2) in the team standings, while Iowa State (-1) sits in third, followed by UC Davis (+6) and San Diego (+8).
The ASU Thunderbird Invitational concludes on Saturday with final-round action as San Diego State is scheduled to tee off alongside Washington State and Minnesota on the No. 10 hole beginning at 8:39 a.m. PDT.
