SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team fell behind early in its regular-season finale Saturday against USC at home and was unable to close the gap, dropping a 16-4 decision on Senior Night at a windy and damp Aztec Lacrosse Field.

With the loss, the Aztecs slip to 9-7 on the season and 5-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Women of Troy raise their record to 12-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

USC outshot SDSU 31-18 and maintained a 14-8 advantage in draw controls to help key its victory.

Individually, the Aztecs managed four single goals by Michaela Jarvis, Alex Watson, Alexa Comfort and Grace Korandovich, while Lauren Paul posted team-highs of six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Conversely, the Women of Troy were paced by Caroline de Lyra and Cynthia Del Core, who recorded four tallies each, while Amanda Johansen completed a hat trick of her own. In addition, Michaela Michael led all players with nine draw controls.

The contest was scoreless through nearly the first eight minutes of action, until Johansen converted a free position shot to spark a 4-0 USC run over the ensuing 10 minutes.

SDSU broke the offensive drought with an unassisted goal by Jarvis at the 9:22 mark, but the Women of Troy responded with another 4-0 spurt to seize momentum as Del Core and de Lyra hit pay dirt on consecutive possessions in the 26th minute to provide the visitors a commanding 8-1 advantage.

The Aztecs notched their second goal of the evening when Jarvis fed Watson for a strike with just over a minute left before intermission.

Neither team was able to find its offensive rhythm in the first eight minutes following the break, until Johansen and de Lyra scored just 32 seconds apart, increasing USC's lead to 10-2.

SDSU finally got on the board on Comfort's strike in the 12th minute, while Korandovich added a marker with just under eight minutes remaining in the game. However, the Scarlet and Black still faced an insurmountable 14-4 deficit as the Women of Troy received a pair of goals from Olivia Gerton in the final five minutes to complete the scoring.

Goalkeeper Katrina Reeves made five saves in front of the net for the Aztecs, while her counterpart Gussie Johns made seven stops on the night before giving way to a pair of reserves late in the game.

San Diego State will begin preparations for the MPSF tournament, squaring off against either Oregon or Colorado in the first round on Thursday, April 30 in Denver, Colo.
