RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team wrapped day one at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Saturday. The Aztecs will finish competition in the two-day regatta on Sunday.
SDSU's first event of the day came in the novice eight race at 11:10 a.m. The Aztecs finished second in their heat, just behind neighbor, University of San Diego. The Toreros crossed the finish line in the top spot with a time of 7 minutes, 5.8 seconds followed by San Diego State (7:25.2), Loyola Marymount (7:43.3), Humboldt State (7:47.2) and Oregon (7:48.8). SDSU's results advance its crew to the grand final which will get underway at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
The second varsity eight crew took to the water at 1:40 p.m. for its event. San Diego State crossed the line in the third position. Stanford finished first (7:21.7), followed by Sacramento State's `A' boat (7:22.8), SDSU (7:28.6), Saint Mary's (7:34.5), University of Portland (7:36.9), Santa Clara University (7:38.0) and Sacramento State's `B' crew (7:55.6). With its third place finish, the Aztecs will be in the third lane for tomorrow's final at 11:10 a.m.
The final event for San Diego State on Saturday came at 2:50 p.m. in the varsity eight race. Stanford finished first in the heat (7:05.1) followed by a tie of Sacramento State (7:10.9) and Seattle University (7:10.9) and finished by SDSU (7:22.7). With its place, the Aztecs will move onto the petite final at 12:20 p.m. tomorrow.
The Aztecs will also compete in the varsity four race at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday.
