The San Diego State softball team had its 10-game conference winning snapped in a 5-0 loss to Fresno State Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (23-13), however, remain in first place in the Mountain West standings at 6-1, one game up on the Bulldogs (24-12, 5-2 MW), New Mexico (5-2 MW) and San Jose State (5-2 MW).

SDSU struggled against FS pitcher Jill Compton, managing just two hits and a walk. Compton (14-9) pitched all seven innings, striking out four.

Fresno State, meanwhile, had 13 hits in the game, including 12 singles and a solo home run by Alyssa Villalpando in the top of the seventh inning. Out of the 12 singles, five were infield hits.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start with three runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout by Paige Gumz and a two-out single up the middle by Villalpando.

San Diego State sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) kept FS at bay until the sixth, when Malia Rivers singled up the middle to plate Chase Leehong.

Villalpando's two-out solo home run in the seventh finished out the scoring for Fresno State. Villalpando led the Bulldog offense by going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

The Aztecs' best chance to score came in the sixth when junior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) led off with a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a single to center field by junior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.). Compton got FS out of the jam by getting SDSU out on a lineout, and two popouts.

San Diego State was 1-for-6 (.167) with runners on base and 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, while Fresno State was 8-for-17 (.471) and 4-for-8 (.500), respectively.

Sophomore Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also singled for the Aztecs.

Romero (21-10) took the loss after allowing five runs on 13 hits, a walk and a hit batter over seven innings. She struck out three.

SDSU looks to start a new MW winning streak when it welcomes the Bulldogs for the second game of the series at 6 p.m. PT Friday.
