SAN DIEGO, Calif. - New Mexico scored five unanswered runs over the opening three innings and San Diego State was unable to complete a comeback as the Lobos defeated the Aztecs, 7-4, Thursday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. With the loss SDSU saw its record fall to 22-8 overall and 10-3 in the Mountain West while UNM improved to 16-11 (8-5 MW).

Trailing 5-0, San Diego State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Ty France's solo home run to left center field. It was the second homer of the year for the Aztec junior third baseman.

The home side got another run back in the next inning as David Hensley reached second on a fielding error and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches by Lobo reliever Preston Ryan.

New Mexico added a run to its total in the seventh to make it 6-2, but SDSU closed to with two by adding a pair of runs to its total in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to 6-4. Danny Sheehan's RBI double brought home Steven Pallares, who had walked to open the frame. Sheehan would later score on Seby Zavala's sacrifice fly to right field.

That would be as close as the Aztecs would get, however, as UNM added an unearned insurance run in the ninth for the final 7-4 score line. Lobo closer Jake Cole then retired the side in the bottom of the inning to nail down the win and record his second save of the season. Ryan was credited with the victory to up his season ledger to 3-1.

San Diego State starting pitcher Bubba Derby would be saddled with the loss after tossing 5.1 innings during which he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits along with four walks and seven strikeouts.

France had a single to go along with his home run and was the lone Aztec to register more than one hits on the night.

The Lobos and Aztecs will continues their three-game series on Friday (April 3) with a contest scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
