STANFORD, Calif. - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team dropped a 22-10 decision to No. 15/13 Stanford on Friday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Cagan Stadium. With the loss, the Aztecs suffered their third straight defeat, falling to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Cardinal raise their record to 10-2 on the season and 6-0 in MPSF action.
SDSU was led by junior Sophie Koubek, who tallied four goals, while sophomore Vicki Porter added two scores of her own. In addition, the Aztec cause was advanced by senior Michaela Jarvis, who contributed a pair of assists, while Lauren Paul scooped up four ground balls.
The Aztecs trailed 4-3 with just under 13 minutes left in the first half before Stanford fashioned a 5-1 run over a span of 5:30 to take control of the game. Collectively, the Cardinal outshot SDSU 38-15 on the evening and maintained a 27-6 advantage in draw controls to help key their victory.
Koubek notched three of her four goals in the first half, including an unassisted strike with just 1:10 elapsed to give the Scarlet and Black its only lead of the game at 1-0 before Stanford responded with a trio of scores over the next three minutes. The Aztecs briefly fought themselves off the ropes to forge a 3-3 tie on back-to-back goals by Koubek and Catherine Shepardson; however, the Cardinal went ahead to stay moments later on a Dillon Schoen conversion with 22:14 remaining in the first half.
The two sides battled through a scoreless stretch of almost 10 minutes until Stanford broke the drought with markers by Lucy Dikeou and Alexandra Crerand, which gave the host school a 6-3 advantage by the 12:16 mark of the period. SDSU tightened the score at 6-4 on senior Christina Ricciardulli's 30th goal of the season with just under 11 minutes remaining in the half, but could draw no closer.
The Cardinal, who built a comfortable 11-5 halftime lead, extended the margin with four goals in the first five minutes of the second period as Rachel Ozer and Kelly Myers took turns with consecutive scores to essentially put the game out of reach.
Ozer led all players with five goals for the contest, while Dikeou finished with four scores to go with a game-high eight draw controls.
