SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team was unable to gain ground on Sunday during the final round of the 69th annual Western Collegiate, finishing in ninth place after shooting a combined 15-over par 365 at Pasatiempo Golf Course. With their performance, the 34th-ranked Aztecs completed their final regular-season tournament with a 54-hole total of 51-over 1101 on the par-70, 6,615-yard track.
Senior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) was the lone SDSU player to crack the top 20 individually, tying for the 14th position at 3-over 213 after firing a 72 on Sunday. The Scripps Ranch High alumnus managed to offset three bogeys with a trio of birdies; however, a double-bogey on his seventh hole of the day, the par-4, 396-yard No. 16, stalled his advance up the leaderboard.
In addition, sophomore Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished four shots in back of Schauffele in 32nd place at 9-over 219 after logging a 72 of his own during the final round. Despite five birdies, the Carlsbad High product was also derailed by an untimely double-bogey on his third-to-last hole of the afternoon, the par-4, 346-yard No. 7.
Elsewhere, a trio of Aztecs, freshman PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii), sophomore Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), all landed in a tie for the 54th spot at 15-over 225.
Samiere vaulted 20 places from the previous round after logging a 71 on Sunday. SDSU's leading rookie drained a team-high six birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-4, 391-yard No. 11, which ranked as the fifth-toughest hole of the final round.
Mendoza, meanwhile, also displayed upward mobility, climbing three places from round two despite carding a 74 over the final 18 holes. The Francis Parker High alumnus found birdies elusive, but still played steady golf for most of the day, recording 14 pars against four bogeys.
Conversely, Michelini experienced a rather precipitous drop, tumbling 21 places from Saturday following a final-round 78. The native Italian was just 1-over for the day after sinking a birdie on the par-3, 181-yard No.18; however, five bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine hastened his slide.
Ironically, SDSU's lowest score of the day was turned in by Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.), an unattached golfer, who catapulted 16 places into a tie for 26th after firing a 68. The Aztec sophomore recorded just one blemish on his card, a bogey at No. 2, while posting 14 pars and three birdies to finish the tournament at 7-over 217.
Texas captured both the team and individual titles on Sunday as Scottie Scheffler (-9) held on for a three-stroke victory over California's Shotaro Ban (-6) to claim medalist honors, while Jon Rahm of Arizona State (-4) landed in the third position, followed by Stanford's Maverick McNealy (-3) and Zach Foushee of Oregon (-3), who tied for the fourth spot.
The Longhorns (+2) shot a collective 10-under 340 during the final round of the six-count-five event to easily outdistance second-place Oregon (+16), while Stanford (+17) finished closely behind in third.
San Diego State will now begin preparation for the Mountain West Championship, scheduled for May 1-3, at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.
